چکیده

A mathematical model for turbulent gas-liquid flows is presented. It is shown that bubble-induced buoyancy resembles natural convection and can be readily incorporated into an incompressible flow solver by using an analog of the Boussinesq approximation. Extra transport equations are introduced to describe the evolution of the gas holdup and compute the turbulent eddy viscosity in the framework of a generalized k − ε model. A robust solution strategy based on nested iterations is proposed for the numerical treatment of the resulting PDE system. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a discrete projection scheme from the family of Pressure Schur Complement methods. High-resolution finite element schemes designed on the basis of algebraic flux correction are employed for the discretization of convective terms. Numerical results for prototypical gas-liquid reactor configurations illustrate the performance of the developed simulation tools.

Detached direct numerical simulations of turbulent two-phase bubbly channel flow

DNS simulations of two-phase turbulent bubbly channel flow at Res = 180 (Reynolds number based on friction velocity and channel half-width) were performed using a stabilized finite element method (FEM) and a level set approach to track the air/water interfaces. Fully developed turbulent single-phase solutions obtained previously using the same stabilized FEM code were used as the initial flow f...

CFD Modeling of Gas-Liquid Hydrodynamics in a Stirred Tank Reactor

Multiphase impeller stirred tank reactors enhance mixing of reacting species used in a variety of chemical industries. These reactors have been studied based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) that can be used in the analysis, design and scale up of these reactors. Most of the researches done in this area are limited to single phase reactors, and a few remaining two phase flow investigat...

Finite element simulation of turbulent bubbly flows

A finite element approach for solving gas-liquid flows with mass transfer and chemical reactions is presented. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a modified k − ε turbulence model for computation of the eddy viscosity are solved by a discrete projection scheme from the family of Pressure Schur Complement methods. Additionally, the simplified two-fluid (Euler-Euler) model ba...

Numerical Simulation of Dynamic Flow Behaviour in a Bubble Column: Comparison of the Bubble-Induced Turbulence Models in the k-ε Model

Numerical simulations of the gas-liquid bubbly flow in a bubble column were conducted with the commercial CFD package CFX-4.4 to investigate the performance of three models (Pfleger and Becker, 2001; Sato and Sekoguchi, 1975; Troshko and Hassan, 2001) to account for the bubble-induced turbulence in the k-ε model. Furthermore, the effect of two different interfacial closure models was investigat...
